Diamond in the rough: WR Victor Butts

BELLE GLADE – The future looks bright for the Glades Central Raiders football program.

A reason for that is the presence of Victor Butts, who is a wide receiver from the Class of 2025.

In his junior campaign, the 5-foot-6, 120-pound wide receiver finished with the following marks:

•21 catches

•260 yards

•2 touchdowns

The best individual game for this diamond in the rough came in Week 10 at home against Atlantic (Delray Beach). He caught five passes for 75 yards and one touchdown in Glades Central’s 36-7 loss to Atlantic.

Butts recapped his junior season with Glades Central.

“I feel my junior year was a little underwhelming to say the least,” he said. “We had somes highs this season, like sending our seniors out with a win on homecoming and senior night (Week 9; 41-3 home win over Suncoast). I loved how everybody came together to play for them on that night. I feel like something we could have done differently as a team was come out better in many of our games. We came out dead and flat, but in the second half we started to pick it up. By then, it was too late.”

As a result of Glades Central’s 2-7 campaign in 2023, the school administration decided to change leadership at the head coach position from Travis Moore to Omar Haugabook, a Raiders alum who was the Pahokee Blue Devils offensive coordinator for the past two seasons there.

Butts weighed in on the change.

“I feel like Coach Moore was actually a good coach, but he just couldn’t really connect with the kids on the team, I guess you could say,”Butts said. “Coach O, I feel like he’s a great coach and more. He pushes each and every one of us to be great not only on the field and in the classroom, but in life. He’s teaching us the do’s and don’ts and how to become a better man. He treats us as if we are actually one of his kids.”

Butts has no college offers or interest at this time. But he is currently doing whatever is necessary to improve his craft through a series of workouts and track.

“Right now he [Haugabook] has the whole team in the weight room every day,” Butts said. “And we are conditioning after that. Most of our skill guys run track and are on the weightlifting team.”

Butts shared his aspirations for his upcoming senior season with Glades Central.

“For my personal goals, I want at least 700 yards and nine touchdowns,” Butts said. “As a team, the obvious goal is playoffs then to win state. But I also want the team to have a winning record in the regular season because we haven’t had one since I have been here.”

We will follow the progress of how Butts does on and off the field for this year and beyond.
