Power mode: Glades Central wins Class 1A-Region 4 weightlifting title

FROSTPROOF – They came. They saw. They conquered.

In what will go down as a positive building block in Glades Central’s rebuilding mission, the boys weightlifting team captured the Class 1A-Region 4 title at Frostproof Middle-Senior High School on Thursday (April 4).

Here are the final scores from the 1A regional weightlifting meet:

1. Glades Central (Belle Glade) – 32 points

2. American Heritage (Delray Beach) – 24 points

3. Marathon – 19 points

4. Doctor’s Charter (Miami Shores) – 17 points

5. Marathon – 15 points

6. Evangelical Christian (Fort Myers) – 15 points; tied with Marathon for fifth place

7. Imagine School (North Port) – 12 points

8. Bradenton Christian – 12 points; tired with Imagine School for seventh place

9. Somerset Academy Canyons – 11 points

10. St. Stephen’s (Bradenton) – 10 points

Glades Central Raiders head coach Sheldon Harriott spoke on how his team earned the team victory.

“First of all, to God be the glory for great things he has done,” Harriott said. “I did not lead this team. This team was led by all of the young men who showed up day in and day out in order to represent an ideal. It was an ideal of excellence not fixed in the past, but rooted there. Not beholden to any future, but in gratitude for this moment, at this time, in this place.”

Harriott touched on what his weightlifters did to earn this team distinction.

“The first thing that we did was to establish a belief in our right to be great,” Harriott said. “We then set immediate and tangible goals. Then as those goals were reached, we set other goals, less immediate but just as tangible. As soon as we realize one goal, we found another one and talked about that goal. We thought about that goal and worked toward that goal. We never stop setting goals and we never stop praying to God.”

Fourth place: Armadi Stinfort – 345

154-LB CLASS FOR GLADES CENTRAL

Eighth place: Hardley Gilmore III – 390

169-LB CLASS FOR GLADES CENTRAL

Fourth place: Damian Espiricuenta – 470

Ninth place: Armaud Stinfort – 430

183-LB CLASS FOR GLADES CENTRAL

Eighth place: J’Len Louis – 430

Ninth place: Henry Orelus – 415

199-LB CLASS FOR GLADES CENTRAL

First place: Paul Glinton – 570

Second place: Jordy Pierre – 580

The Raiders placed in eight out of 10 total weight classes: 119, 129, 139, 154, 169, 183, 199, and 219. They did not place in the 238-pound and unlimited weight classes.
