Mr. Heidelberg: Keyshawn Cunningham wins honor as Male Athlete of the Year

TIFFIN, Ohio – The 2024 Siggy Awards will go down as one to savor in more ways than one for Keyshawn Cunningham.

Heidelberg University is a Division III institution that has 10 college sports each on both the men’s and women sides, along with two co-ed sports. This makes it a grand total of 22 sports combined.

To put this in perspective, the cousin of NFL Hall of Fame candidate and Pahokee legend was nominated as Heidelberg’s Male Athlete of the Year for his Third-Team All-American season in 2023. He went up against the likes of Jake McEntyre (track) and Eric Panning (basketball).

Cunningham won the Male Athlete of the Year award and received a thunderous applause from the Heidelberg crowd in the process this past Sunday night (April 14).

Cunningham provided additional comments on his special honor.

“Being named the Heidelberg Male Athlete of the Year means everything to me,” he said. “It’s a validation of the effort and commitment I’ve poured into my sport. It’s not just about personal achievement; it’s about representing my school and community with pride. This recognition serves as a reminder of the support I’ve received and the responsibility I have to continue striving for excellence both on and off the field. I also have an amazing support system from my family, friends, coaches, and athletic trainers.”

This honor is significant for another reason.

Cunningham is the first Palm Beach County individual to win this honor from Heidelberg. He spoke on this historic achievement.

“Making 561 history with this award is an amazing feeling,” Cunningham said. “It’s not just about personal achievement; it’s about leaving a legacy that will inspire future athletes. Knowing that my name will be associated with a milestone in the history of Heidelberg sports is humbling. I just want to be a light for the underdogs back home and be a great example.”
