Riviera Beach restart: ATH Tony Richardson

RIVIERA BEACH – Tony Richardson has spent his first three years of high school at a prestigious Riviera Beach campus.

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound athlete from Pahokee made the most of his time at Suncoast for the 2021, 2022, and 2023 high school football seasons. His junior year may have been his most productive one overall, as he posted the following statistics:

OFFENSE

•624 rushing yards, 3 rushing touchdowns

•102 receiving yards

•123 passing yards, 2 passing touchdowns

•849 total yards

DEFENSE

•2 forced fumbles

•1 interception

“From the past three years at Suncoast, I had a great experience,” Richardson said. “The coaches and teammates helped me get better and learn more about football. Freshman year I was on varsity. I started as the backup running back, but ended up starting at the end of the season with two interceptions and over 200 yards. Sophomore year I would say my best year, reaching over 900 rushing yards and three touchdowns and also three interceptions. Junior year season was good. I was constantly progressing every day, but I feel like I could have gone in the weight room more and put more time into football in my free time, like attending football camps and also private workouts with coach.”

During the offseason, Richardson decided to make a change. He transferred from one Riviera Beach-based high school to the other one, as he went from Suncoast to Inlet Grove in the winter.

“I transferred to Inlet from Suncoast because Inlet is more sport-oriented than Suncoast, which could lead to better opportunities like offers and getting my name more out there,” Richardson said. “I would say Inlet is going to further me this year.”

At this time, Richardson has an offer from UNC Pembroke and interest from the likes of James Madison, UNC Charlotte, UMass, and Richmond.

With that said, Richardson has been hard at work in improving his overall craft. Evidence of this occurred in the spring football circuit, where he had two rushing touchdowns in Inlet Grove’s intra-squad scrimmage earlier this month.

“Spring football was good,” Richardson said. “I really felt improvement from myself already. I was growing comfortable with the team and my coaches. I adapted quickly to their ways of playing.”

The summer offseason presents the potential for Richardson to gain more exposure.

Inlet Grove will be going on a college camp tour from June 18 to June 22 at the following stops:

•Georgia State

•Wake Forest

•UNC Charlotte

•John C. Smith

“During the college tour, I’m hoping to put my name out there more and get more recognition with offers,” Richardson said. “I’m also hoping to have fun and just keep getting better during those times.”

There will be other ongoing workouts that will take place this summer, including a yet-to-be announced 7-on-7 tournament that Inlet Grove is slated to take part in.

After the summer will be the fall football season, which will last from the end of July until sometime in either late October, November or December.

“My goal for senior year is to continuing growing as a player and not only be good, but have fun,” Richardson said. “I don’t want to feel like the sport is becoming a chore, but something I enjoy doing. I want to be more involved with my teammates and also learn, grow, and help them become successful as well. My dream school that I want to go to is Pitt. And just know that my hard work will pay off.”
