Not to be slept on: QB Jonny Ahern

JENSEN BEACH – He is focused, energized, and inspired.

Jensen Beach 2025 quarterback Jonny Ahern knows his worth and his recruiting status at this time. With no offers to date – only interest from the likes of Concordia, St. Paul and Lenoir-Rhyne – the 6-foot-4, 160-pound dual threat signal caller aims to let his play speak for itself.

“I keep getting overlooked,” Ahern said. “But I use it as motivation.”

We have both statistics and film to make a strong case for Ahern’s recruiting stock to rise at some point.

Let us start with the numbers.

Ahern started at quarterback for Jensen Beach’s last six games of this past season, including its Class 3S-Region 3 playoff quarterfinal game against Rockledge. Here are his marks right below.

•823 passing yards

•12 passing touchdowns

•6 interceptions

•189 rushing yards

•1 rushing touchdown

•118 receiving yards

•1 receiving touchdown

•1000+ all-purpose yards on the season

Best individual game: Week 6 against Port St. Lucie in 41-0 win; 7-for-11 passing, 109 yards, four touchdowns, one interception

“I had four touchdowns in the first half in the Port St. Lucie game,” Ahern said. “I really built my confidence up for games down the road, and it helped build my confidence showing I can make plays down the field and can be trusted in the pocket.”

In Week 10 of the regular season, Ahern went on to complete 7 of 11 passes for a season-high 165 yards with three touchdown passes and no interceptions. He led Jensen Beach to a 27-0 in that one.

“Bayside was a big game too,” Ahern said. “I had three touchdowns in first half. It just gave me the confidence that I could lead the team against good defenses, and it got me ready for playoff-caliber teams.”

Ahern recapped his junior season with the Falcons.

“I loved playing with the seniors I grew up as I played with them the most,” Ahern said. “In football terms I loved how many big plays were made. We were an exciting team to watch offensively and defensively. Obviously that loss to Rockledge really hurts to this day. That’s the main thing I wish went differently last season, holding on to our 16-0 lead at the half. But I learned a lot from that loss.”

Ahern spoke further on Jensen Beach’s season-ending 19-16 overtime loss at home to Rockledge in the first round of the Class 3S playoffs.

“We were leading at halftime 16-0 after everyone in the state thought we would be getting blown out,” said Ahern, who finished the game by going 7-for-13 with 150 passing yards, one touchdown, one interception, and 25 rushing yards.

“I believe we were confident going into halftime,” Ahern continued. “But we got a little cocky and thought the rest of the game would be a breeze. Rockledge took advantage of that mentality and went and tied the game up. We went into overtime and we just didn’t execute. But I learned a lot about myself as a player battling through the adversity in the second half. It’s given me a drive all offseason to work harder so that loss will never happen again.”

Ahern touched on what it meant to play with former teammate and 2024 alum Jason Curry, who transferred with him from South Fork to Jensen Beach in 2023.

“It was great,” Ahern said of Curry, who is now at Concordia University for college football. “He was my brother, and getting to play with him and throw him the ball was a great feeling. He was reliable and a playmaker on both sides of the ball.”

Ahern on his transfer move from South Fork to Jensen Beach in January 2023:

“A lot of thought went into that decision,” Ahern said. “I wanted to win and play more high school football games (playoffs). I also wanted to compete with higher level teams and show that I can be the best and stand out on a more stacked roster as well. Coach Caffey showed a lot of confidence in me as an athlete, and I believe I have been able to show how good of an athlete I am on the field with the opportunities he has given me.”

With that said, the offseason has been going quite well for Ahern in more ways than one.

Case in point: Ahern was one of the top overall performers at quarterback throughout the Keiser 7-on-7 Tournament this past weekend. We have film to back this up, so you can a look below for yourself.

“I liked how smooth it felt being out there in front of all those people and teams,” Ahern said. “I think I have a lot to prove as far as being one of the best in the area at my position. I believe I’ve shown that and will continue to show that. What stood out was how well things clicked with some of our new transfers. That was their first tournament with us and they handled it well. We still have more to work on though as we head into the season.”

Jensen Beach has at least four transfers that came to the Birdcage during the offseason. Ahern spoke on it.

“We got a lot of talent that came in,” Ahern said. “Tristin Taylor (transfer from Martin County) is a highly sought recruit and great WR1. But we also got two more slot receivers that came in as well. Garrick Lewis (Martin County transfer) is a speedster and Samir Sammons (South Fork transfer) is just a smart and mature guy. We even added Dominic Lucci (Martin County transfer), who is a great running back. I can’t wait to see him and Dy’lond Holmes – our other running back – take over the run game.”

Ahern has visited several colleges in this offseason, which include the likes of UCF, USF and FAU for spring practices, the FAU and FIU spring games, and the USF Mega Camp this past month.

He also has visited UTEP for its Junior Day with fellow Jensen Beach 2025 standouts Johnny Delancey, Julius Puryear and Easton Scott. The three were hosted by Jensen Beach legend and current UTEP assistant coach Kade Glenn.

“Kade had me, Julius, Easton and Johnny show out there,” Ahern said. “It was a great time. He showed us a lot of love and still does.”

There will be one more summer camp that Jensen Beach is set to participate in. It is the Webber International full team camp from July 18-20 in Babson Park.

“Other than that we’re just training and getting ready for the season,” Ahern said. “Julius, Easton and I have knocked off the visiting schools and camps early on this summer, so now all we got our eyes on is the kickoff classic.”

Ahern wrapped it all up with his aspiration for this upcoming season at Jensen Beach.

“My individual goal is to be the first ever quarterback at Jensen to rush for 1000 and throw for 1000 yards in a season,” Ahern said. “Our team goal is get to states, nothing short of that. I’m going to do my part to help our team make it happen.”
