VERO BEACH – About one week before we officially end the summer offseason, Anthwone Montgomery made a big decision for himself.

The Vero Beach 2025 defensive lineman, who plays at both defensive tackle and defensive end, announced his verbal commitment last night (July 21) to Austin Peay.

The 6-foot-3, 270-pound defensive leader chose Austin Peay over the likes of Western Kentucky, Lafayette, Southeastern, and Keiser. He has picked up five college scholarship offers in his recruiting process.

Montgomery (No. 6-ranked overall player on the Treasure Coast; 2025 class) spoke on what led him to go with Austin Peay.

“I was up there for a unofficial visit and they welcomed me with open arms, showed me around the beautiful campus and facilities,” Montgomery said. “It felt like home.”

Montgomery earned his scholarship offer from the Clarksville, Tenn.-based FCS (Division 1) school earlier last month.

What led Montgomery to this opportunity was his stellar production on the field. This past season as a junior in 12 games played, the Indians team leader posted the following statistics:

•47 total tackles

•11.5 tackles for loss

•3 sacks

•12 quarterback hurries

•2 pass breakups

•1 fumble recovery

Montgomery reflected on his junior campaign at Vero Beach.

“I loved how we were as a brotherhood,” he said. “We all knew that we had each other’s back and nothing could’ve changed that. Something that we could’ve done differently is us being disciplined and not making costly penalties.”

The offseason has been one to remember for Montgomery in more ways than one. He touched on how he has improved his craft as a lineman.

“Workouts have bettered my craft by making me stronger and faster,” he said. “And the camps that I’ve been to this summer have bettered my craft on the offensive and defensive side of the ball, as I worked out at defensive line at the FSU camp and worked out at offensive line at the UCF camp.”

Montgomery shared his upcoming senior season aspirations for himself and the venerable Vero Beach program.

“My individual goals are always to have better stats from the last season,” he said. “So last season I had 47 tackles, and now I want to aim for 50 to 60 tackles and the same for sacks. And the team goal is to win the state championship.”

EDITOR’S NOTE: We wish Montgomery nothing but the best in all of what he sets out to do from this point forward.
