Week 1: Centennial uses running game to push past Wellington in 26-12 win

WELLINGTON – Knotted in a 6-6 tie at halftime, the season opener between the Centennial Eagles and the Wellington Wolverines could have gone either way.

On Thursday night (Aug. 22), it mostly worked out for Centennial in the second half.

Centennial celebrates its 26-12 win over Wellington.

After Wellington recovered an onside kick to start the third quarter, it seemed as if the home team would be on its way to grabbing a lead at some point.

But in just one play, Wellington’s hopes of taking the lead vanished as senior athlete Damian Fearon Jr. caught an interception for Centennial.

And then a few plays later, Eagles sophomore athlete Jermonty Kimbrough powered his way past the lines and went off to the races for a 35-yard touchdown run at the 8:09 mark of the third quarter.

With the Kimbrough score, Centennial went up 12-6 over Wellington.

The next scoring drive came early in the fourth quarter, when senior running back Giovany Alan got his rushing touchdown off an 8-yard run to the end zone with 9:10 left.

With the first of two extra points by sophomore kicker Cristian Soto, Centennial extended its lead to 19-6 over Wellington.

And in less than two minutes, Centennial found the end zone again on a rushing play. This time it was a 1-yard touchdown run from Kimbrough at the 7:59 mark.

The second extra point by Soto extended the lead further to 26-6 in favor of Centennial.

The road team survived a Wellington touchdown toward the end of the game, as junior quarterback Jonathan Paul found junior wide receiver Jose Bras for a 15-yard pass to the end zone with 2:52 left.

Paul’s scoring pass to Bras would serve as the game’s final score at 26-12.

The junior signal-caller finished the night with one touchdown pass and one touchdown run, a 1-yarder to the end zone that tied the game up at 6-6 with 2:35 left in the first half.

The first score of the game – 6-0 lead for Centennial- occurred on the road team’s first offensive drive, which resulted in a touchdown pass from junior quarterback Mason Brown to senior athlete Cameron “Cam” Harris.

With the win, Centennial starts the season at 1-0.

Watch the group interview from Centennial head coach Jacob Turay (second year at the helm) and several of his players all together.

Meanwhile, Wellington will begin its season with a 0-1 record.
