We back: Glades Central opens season with thrilling OT win over Seminole Ridge

WESTLAKE – You may hear the Glades Central Raiders say one thing a lot this season.

“We back,” senior defensive back Tavarion James said after his team pulled off an electrifying 34-31 overtime road win last night (Aug. 23) over the Seminole Ridge Hawks.

You can believe it after Glades Central junior running back Armoud Stinfort zig-zagged his way into the clear for a 5-yard touchdown run to effectively end the game.

Aside from Stinfort’s game-winning run to the end zone, here is how Glades Central (1-0) earned its first official win of the season:

Down 21-14 with just a few minutes left in regulation, the Raiders overcame a 21-point second half scoring splurge from the Hawks and used a mix of runs and passes to break through.

With 2:02 left in the fourth quarter, junior quarterback Taj Barnes found a very wide open receiver on the left corner in senior wide receiver Gregory King, who caught the ball and jogged into the end zone.

An extra point by the Raiders would tie the game up at 21-21.

Two scores took place in a span of 13 seconds, as they helped to set the stage up for overtime.

With 1:37 left in regulation, Seminole Ridge senior quarterback and Belle Glade Garrett Rimes fired off a perfect pass from near midfield to consensus four-star college football prospect and senior Ty Jackson for a touchdown.

With the extra point, Seminole Ridge took a 28-21 lead over Glades Central.

But this thing was far from over.

In 13 seconds, we got a blazing kickoff return for a touchdown from senior athlete Jerrmyll Ray, who went off to the races untouched as he reached the end zone in style for Glades Central.

An extra point tied the game up at 28-28 with 1:24 left in regulation.

And then to end the fourth quarter, we got an interception caught by Glades Central senior defensive back Tavarion James as he effectively sent the game into overtime.

From there, it was two possessions from the opponent’s 10-yard line.

Seminole Ridge (0-1) had multiple chances to score. But after three tries, the home team settled for a field goal to go up 31-28.

And then it was Glades Central’s turn to answer back.

After two plays made that did not go too far, Stinfort’s program-changing play sealed the deal for the Raiders.

As a result of the team’s level of resilience, first-year head coach Omar Haugabook earned his first official win at the helm for Glades Central.
