Coming into form: Glades Central dominates Dwyer

PALM BEACH GARDENS – The Glades Central Raiders have reached the halfway point of their resurgent season.

The Muck’s No. 1 team this year currently has a 5-0 record after pulling away last night (Sept. 19) from the Dwyer Panthers on the road in a 33-7 win.

After a weather delay of almost two hours – the game did not kick off until 8:15 p.m. – this tilt had the look and feel of a close one from start to finish.

This contest was scoreless for most of the first half, considering the fact that a touchdown was waved off for Dwyer (1-4) due to an offensive penalty in the first quarter.

After the Panthers were penalized for using illegal personnel to push a runner to the end zone, they were in position to put points on the board for a few more play. But a missed field goal on fourth down effectively turned the momentum away from the Panthers and toward the Raiders.

With 4:30 left in the second quarter, Glades Central junior running back Armaud Stinfort (9 carries, 64 yards on the night) powered his way for a 5-yard touchdown run down the middle of the field. This gave Glades Central a 6-0 lead over Dwyer.

And then with less than one minute left in the second frame, Raiders sophomore defensive back Daryl Goring (four tackles) caught an interception return for a touchdown.

With an extra point by kicker Christian Reyes, Glades Central’s lead was extended to 13-0.

To end the first half, we got a defensive interception from senior defensive back Samorrious Green.

In the third quarter, Glades Central effectively put this game out of reach.

We got a 1-yard rushing touchdown from senior athlete Jerrmyll Ray and an extra point from kicker Javier Flores, who combined to extend their team’s lead to 20-0 at the 8:52 mark.

Later in the third quarter, Dwyer senior quarterback Koden Brown ran past the Glades Central defense for his team’s only score of the game. The rushing touchdown – plus an extra point from kicker Andrew Fiedor – would cut the Raiders lead to 20-7 at the 3:36 mark.

But the game’s final 13 points scored were all from Glades Central – one toward the end of the third quarter and one in the fourth quarter.

We got an open touchdown pass from Raiders junior quarterback Taj Barnes (18-for-28 passing, 204 yards, 1 touchdown, 0 interceptions) to senior wide receiver Gregory King III (4 catches, 55 yards) with 59 seconds left in the third. A second extra point by Reyes would extend Glades Central’s lead to 27-7.

Two more things happened in the game, both of which happened in a span of a few seconds left in the fourth quarter.

With 4:42 left, Goring caught his second interception of this game. And just nine seconds later, Stinfort scored his second rushing touchdown of the game at the 4:33 mark.

Glades Central caught three interceptions and recovered two lost fumbles. So in essence, the Muck program won the turnover battle over Dwyer.
