Home opener: Keiser routs Fort Lauderdale, 45-0

WEST PALM BEACH – This one was easy.

As the nation’s No. 1-ranked team in NAIA, the Keiser Seahawks mostly stuck to their strengths en route to a 45-0 shutout win over the Fort Lauderdale Eagles in the home opener on Saturday night (Sept. 21).

Keiser (3-0) gained a total of 460 yards while limiting Fort Lauderdale (0-1) to 125 total yards.

Senior running back Jaden Meizinger registered three touchdowns in the first half, including a 20-yarder to open the scoring up with 10:43 left in the first quarter. His other touchdown runs were on runs of five and six yards in the beginning of the second quarter.

Meizinger finished with eight carries for 76 yards and the three rushing scores. He added one reception for eight yards, making it a total of 84 yards for the night.

Meizinger recapped his effort and more in a press conference that you can see right below.

As for the defense, graduate senior defensive lineman Bam Brima led the way with nine tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, one forced fumble, and one pass breakup. The transfer from Pitt stated that he was part of just the second shoutout of his collegiate career.

As for the rest of the team, the running game was on point with 242 yards gained on the ground. The Seahawks used five runners to combine for that total, including the likes of freshman running back Jaden Miller (five carries, 85 yards, one touchdown) and junior running back Andrew Burnette (13 carries, 67 yards, one touchdown; one catch, three yards; 70 total yards).

The Seahawks went on to score five of their six touchdowns on the ground in this one.

As for the other score, it came off a 52-yard touchdown pass from graduate senior quarterback Shea Spencer (5-for-7, 97 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions) to third-year sophomore wide receiver Maurico Porcha at the 3:44 mark of the first quarter. The game’s only score in the air – plus an extra point by senior kicker Ben Derby – gave the Seahawks a 14-0 lead over the Eagles.

Speaking of Derby, he made all six of his extra point attempts and was 1-for-2 on his field goal attempts in the home opener. He missed a 30-yard field with six seconds left in the first half, but made a 22-yarder with 5:10 left in the third quarter.

With the win, Keiser will finish undefeated in non-conference play for this season, including two wins on the road over two Division II teams (23-20 overtime win over North Greenville on Thursday, Sept, 5; 42-33 win over Newberry College on Saturday, Sept. 14).

Keiser first-year head coach and West Boca Raton alum Myles Russ recapped the game action and more at his press conference. Hear his words from start to finish right below.
