From Muck City to Royal Palm Beach: Sam Curry lands head coach position

ROYAL PALM BEACH – The foundation and stage has been set for sustainable success at Royal Palm Beach.

Coming off a 7-3 regular season record and Class 6A playoff appearance for a 7-4 final record, Sam Curry led the Wildcats offense as their offensive coordinator to 279.9 yards per game and 23.7 points per game for the 2024 season.

While those numbers may not be eye-popping, the important thing here is that Curry’s offensive personnel were mostly comprised of freshmen and sophomores.

Curry was part of a coaching staff that learned and grew under the leadership of then-head coach Chuck Kenyon, who was nominated for the Lou Groza Coach of the Year in 2024.

Speaking of Kenyon, he decided to hand the reins over to the Belle Glade native in a social media announcement that was released last night (April 21) by Royal Palm Beach High School’s athletics department.

Curry, who also oversees the Royal Palm Beach Wildcats youth football organization, is thankful for the opportunity to lead the “New Royal” to another dimension.

“Honestly, I feel incredibly honored and excited to step into the role as the new head coach at Royal Palm Beach,” Curry said. “This is not just a new chapter for me, but for the team as well. I see it as an opportunity to build on the foundation that’s already here, bring in fresh energy, and push us all to new levels. I’m passionate about creating a culture that values discipline, teamwork, and growth on and off the field. My goal is to not only continue our success from last season under the guidance of Coach Kenyon but to continue to develop these athletes into leaders. I truly believe that with hard work and unity, we’re going to move forward stronger than ever.”

Curry credits Kenyon for helping him to be ready for this moment.

“Coach Kenyon played a huge role in my development as a high school coach with showing me the ins and outs of being a coach at the high school level,” Curry said. “Watching him build a strong culture at Royal Palm Beach taught me the importance of consistency, accountability, and believing in your players. He led with passion, faith and purpose, and that rubbed off on everyone around him. He didn’t just focus on winning games; he focused on building men, building character. Being under his leadership helped shape my coaching philosophy. I’m grateful for the standard he set and I’m committed to carrying that legacy forward.”

Royal Palm Beach sophomore quarterback Max Griner (2,067 passing yards, 17 touchdown passes, nine interceptions in 11 games last season) is thankful for everything that Kenyon has done to bring the Wildcats to this juncture.

“Coach Kenyon took the program to another level,” Griner said. “He also believed in us when nobody did. He was a great coach and better mentor and he passed us into great hands. All love for him.”

Griner is quite happy for this opportunity to play for Curry as his new head coach. This arrangement happened on the youth football level as well, which adds to the euphoria that is taking place here.

“Sam Curry being the new coach is a great addition to the team overall,” Griner said. “He really cares about the players outside of football and wants them to be better in life. I’ve known him for about three years and he’s helped me out tremendously throughout my career. I’m very excited to have him as a new head coach.”
