Road to Tampa: All four No. 1 seeds win regional titles to reach State Final Four

PALM BEACH COUNTY – The night of Thursday, May 1, 2025 will go down as a seminal moment in a special way.

For the first time in Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) flag football history, we saw four Palm Beach County teams earn No. 1 seeds and win their respective regional titles.

CLASS 4A-REGION 3: No. 1 seed Wellington 27, No. 2 seed Fort Pierce Central 19

CLASS 3A-REGION 2: No. 1 seed Seminole Ridge 26, No. 2 seed Belleview 6

CLASS 2A-REGION 4: No. 1 seed Dr. Joaquin Garcia 20, No. 3 seed Miami Northwestern 13

CLASS 1A-REGION 3: No. 1 seed Somerset Academy Canyons 33, No. 2 seed David Posnack 6

As a result of this, we will have a Palm Beach County team in all four classifications for the FHSAA State Final Four at AdventHealth Center in Tampa.

The state semifinal games will take place on Thursday, May 8 and Friday, May 9. The state title games will take place on Saturday, May 10.

Here are the state semifinal matchups for our four Palm Beach County teams:

CLASS 1A STATE SEMIFINAL: Thursday, May 8 – 4 p.m. start time

No. 1 overall seed Wildwood (12-0) vs. No. 4 overall seed Somerset Academy Canyons (16-3)

This will be the most significant game in The Set’s flag football history, as it will go into the state semifinal as an underdog. But if anyone has been around the program, they will know that the female athletes tend to play their best when the odds are stacked against them.

Anything can happen. Here’s hoping the Lady Cougars play their best game of the season and advance to Saturday’s Class 1A title game.

CLASS 2A STATE SEMIFINAL: Friday, May 9 – 5:30 p.m. start time

No. 2 overall seed Choctawhatchee (17-2) vs. No. 3 overall seed Dr. Joaquin Garcia (17-0)

Of our four flag football state semifinalists from Palm Beach County, this one is worth watching the most. Expect a competitive and close game from start to finish – similar to what Dr. Garcia experienced in its close seven-point win over Miami Northwestern in the 2A regional final last Thursday night.

Dr. Garcia won its last game as an underdog. It can do so again.

Here’s hoping the second-year program can reach the Class 2A state title game. Regardless of the outcome on Friday evening, we are super proud of the Lady Bulldogs for all they have accomplished to date.

CLASS 3A STATE SEMIFINAL: Thursday, May 8 – 7 p.m. start time

No. 1 overall seed Seminole Ridge (15-2) vs. No. 4 overall seed East Bay (17-3)

Seminole Ridge has been nearly flawless on both sides of the ball throughout the Class 3A playoffs to date. In its three FHSAA state playoff games to date, the Lady Hawks outscored all of their opponents by a score of 112-6.

Do you know what this means?

The nation’s No. 1-ranked team – per MaxPreps – have averaged 37.3 points per game and have allowed just two points per game in the regional rounds. This is pure domination from a well-oiled machine of a team, led by head coach Scott O’Hara.

Will we see this trend continue in the 3A state semifinal? It could happen.

Expect Seminole Ridge to take care of business and do more than enough to reach the Class 3A state title game on Saturday (May 10).

CLASS 4A STATE SEMIFINAL: Friday, May 9 – 7 p.m. start time

No. 1 overall seed Wellington (16-1) vs. No. 4 overall seed Spruce Creek (19-0)

The nation’s No. 2-ranked team – per MaxPreps – has been in some tough battles. It is safe to say that the Lady Wolverines might be the state’s – and nation’s – most battle-tested team remaining in the FHSAA state flag football playoffs.

Wellington survived a furious late rally from Fort Pierce Central in its eight-point home win last Thursday night. It took several defensive stops for the Lady Wolverines to come out on top in what was perhaps the state’s Game of the Year.

We can safely say that Wellington – led by head coach Robert Callovi – is fully equipped to overcome any challenge it faces and fully equipped to blow out opponents with ease.

Which outcome will we see on Friday night?

Expect another win for Wellington as it looks to make good on its second consecutive State Final Four appearance and leave Tampa with the Class 4A state title.

STATE TITLE GAMES: SATURDAY, MAY 10

  • CLASS 3A: 4:45 p.m. start time
  • CLASS 2A: 6:30 p.m. start time
