ROYAL PALM BEACH – Without any shadow of doubt, Demetrius Gibson is the best overall player in the Class of 2028.
We want to make this crystal clear right off the bat. We have evidence of this being the case.
For the kickoff classic on this past Friday (Aug. 15), the Royal Palm Beach sophomore wide receiver put on a show to remember against South Fork in a 35-2 blowout win on the road.
Here are Gibson’s statistics from last Friday night:
•5 receptions
•130 yards
•2 touchdowns
Gibson scored both of his receiving touchdowns in the second half from junior quarterback and team leader Max Griner. His first touchdown catch was in the third quarter and his second touchdown catch was in the fourth quarter.
“I told Max Griner the DB (defensive back) was playing up,” Gibson said. “So he option routed me to a bomb, which made me score. Then the other touchdown was a slant. The linebackers played the run, which made the slant open in the middle. So Max hit me for another touchdown.”
For his efforts, Gibson was voted by pollsters as the Muckstepper of Week 0.

“It feels good to be Muckstepper of Week 0,” the 5-foot-11, 140-pound wide receiver and athlete said. “I just have been showing my offseason talent and getting myself ready for the season.”
Gibson on Royal Palm Beach’s 33-point road win over South Fork:
“It feels good,” Gibson said. “We’re just showing how hard we have been working over the summer and to put more respect on Royal Palm High.”
Gibson is apparently in great shape with new Royal Palm Beach head coach Sam Curry at the helm. He has been playing for him since he was a youngster several years ago with the Royal Palm Beach Wildcats youth football program.
Gibson sees Curry and assistant coaches Dee Rolle and Brandon Huggins as positive role models for him in more ways than one.
“The three of them are some great coaches,” Gibson said. “Since they have been my coaches since little league, I knew what program I was coming to. They have been helping all of us get better, but most importantly be better men on and off the field.”
As a freshman this past season, Gibson racked up the following statistics:
OFFENSE
•35 receptions
•724 yards
•8 touchdowns
DEFENSE
•15 total tackles
•4 pass breakups
•4 interceptions
•89-yard interception return for touchdown in Week 3 against Suncoast (40-11 win)
TOTALS
•856 total yards
•9 total touchdowns
Gibson wants to improve on these numbers in his sophomore season with the varsity Wildcats.
“My goal is to get 1,000 receiving yards and help my team to get to states,” said Gibson, who has three offers from Western Kentucky, Bethune Cookman, and West Virginia State.
Gibson’s road to 1,000+ receiving yards will begin tonight (August 22) in Week 1 at home against Port St. Lucie. The kickoff time is set for 6:30 p.m.
