Muckstepper of Week 1: QB Xavier Mitchell

WELLINGTON – This one is not up for debate anywhere in Palm Beach County.

For the first time in our area’s recent memory, a quarterback from the Muck outshined all others at his position in regular season each.

Pahokee senior quarterback Xavier Mitchell had a masterful performance in Week 1 against Palm Beach Central, which is a perennial top-tier program in Palm Beach County. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound signal caller and Blue Devils team leader posted the following statistics in his team’s 27-25 road win on Friday, Aug. 22:

•308 passing yards

•3 touchdown passes

•No interceptions

•No fumbles lost

The combination of stats, plus his high level of poise and pocket presence, helped propel the Blue Devils to another level in the eyes of all Palm Beach County media outlets. This matters because it shows that Mitchell can make the plays necessary to put his team on his back against good to great teams.

No one can say that Mitchell only does well against lesser competition. If there were any doubts about Mitchell’s quarterback abilities, this game should quiet the doubters – at least for a few weeks.

Mitchell threw two of his three scoring passes to newcomer and junior wide receiver/tight end Antoine Lawrence. His other score was a screen pass to senior running back/athlete Samuel Arnold, who outran Palm Beach Central’s defense for an 80-yard score early in the third quarter.

In addition to that, Palm Beach County’s No. 5-ranked quarterback and No. 46 overall player nailed a punt in the fourth quarter as a Palm Beach Central player muffed it in the process. This resulted in Pahokee’s special teams fumble recovery and Mitchell’s opportunity to lead his offense to a closeout drive later in the final frame.

Watch some of the action below for yourself.

For his overall impact on the team and the game  itself, Mitchell has been selected by Muck City Media as the Muckstepper of Week 1.

After the game, Mitchell had a group moment with Lawrence, Arnold, and senior defensive lineman Cormarion Embry as they recapped the Week 1 win.

Pahokee head coach Carlos Lammons spoke on Mitchell and how his game helped elevate the team. He also made a bold declaration that one needs to listen to closely.

We are looking forward to greater moments for Mitchell as the season goes on.

Next game for No. 4 Pahokee (1-0): Friday, Aug. 29 at home against Cypress Lake (Fort Myers) (0-1); 7 p.m. kickoff
