Overcomer: Remington Young leads Inlet Grove to winning record

RIVIERA BEACH – Many pundits expected a fully lost season for Remington Young and the Inlet Grove Hurricanes.

This was his first head coaching job with a very small and inexperienced roster. This was his first leading role in which support was quite lacking at some point.

Despite the myriad of challenges along the way, Young has been able to beat the odds by leading Inlet Grove to a 4-2 record after six games played in the regular season.

Here are the four wins that Inlet Grove has earned this season:

Week 3 vs. Somerset Academy Key: 30-0 home win on Thursday, Sept. 4

Week 5 vs. Somerset Academy South Homestead: 25-12 home win on Friday, Sept. 19

Makeup Game vs. Palm Beach Christian Prep: 62-0 home win on Monday, Sept. 29

Week 7 vs. ABF Academy: 14-2 home win on Thursday, Oct. 2

And with that, Inlet Grove has a chance to reach the FHSAA Class 2A postseason next month.

“I think winning against ABF to come back with under a minute is history for us,” Young said. “And us now being ranked at No. 8 in the region [Class 2A-Region 3] shows how important that win was. At the end of the day, I leave it all in God’s hands. He’s guided us and He’s been with us all year. I would love to get in the playoffs. If we do get in we could shock who ever we play.”

This has happened despite senior starting quarterback RJ Hickox – a transfer from Dwyer – playing only four games before his season and high school football career came to an early end.

This has happened with a new quarterback coming in midseason to replace Hickox. His name is Demetry Hudson and he is from Colleyville, Texas.

Watch Hudson (6-foot-2, 180 pounds) in action right below.

There have been some individual and team accomplishments along the way in these six games.

Today (Oct. 9), Inlet Grove freshman wide receiver De’wayne Jones won a ESPN West Palm Beach poll for Best Play of Week 7.

And after Inlet Grove earned its first win of the season in Week 3 against Somerset Academy Key, ESPN West Palm Beach honored the program as Team of the Week.

Inlet Grove still has four games left to play in the regular season. At least two of the four games must convert into wins if the Hurricanes figure to remain in the Class 2A playoff hunt at the end of this month.

Here are the remaining games:

Week 8 at Jupiter Christian: Tonight (Oct. 9) at 6:30 p.m.

Week 9 at Legacy: Thursday, Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m.

Week 10 at Orlando Christian Prep: Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.

Week 11 at McLaughlin: Friday, Oct. 31 at 7:30 p.m.

PLEASE NOTE: Inlet Grove has no more home games left this season.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE: Inlet Grove’s two losses were in District 11-2A play against Somerset Academy Canyons (Week 4 on Sept. 12; 14-0 defeat at home) and King’s Academy (Week 6 on Sept. 26; 28-6 defeat on the road). It finished at 0-2 in district play.

“A lot can happen in the next couple of weeks,” Young said. “We have been focused more about how we can just win each game and restart each week to be 1-0. To see that we are ranked at eighth just goes to show you when you don’t focus on other things and just focus on winning, the rest falls in place.”
